Ring Settings 101

A key detail when designing your ring is choosing your ring’s setting – how the stone is set into or on the ring band. While a majority of our styles feature basket settings as standard, there are a number of other setting styles to choose from.

Before you make your choice, read on to find out more information on five of the most beautiful ring settings available.

1. Basket Setting

Designed to safely secure your stone while optimising its appearance and style, basket settings are a very popular choice that embodies modern and minimalistic style. In this setting style, metal prongs (normally 4-6) extend up from one central point on the base of the band, to hold the stone in place. These prongs are linked by a metal gallery rail that sits horizontally around the stone for extra structural integrity, forming a basket.

2. Cathedral Setting

The most classic option, a cathedral setting is elegant, very structurally sound and elevates the stone beautifully. Similar to a basket setting, a cathedral setting also features prongs that extend up from the base of the band, linked by a gallery rail, but with the added feature of metal shoulders rising from further along the band to join to the gallery rail. These add an extra visual feature, and extra structure integrity too.

Our Signature Trilogy styles feature a cathedral setting, but we can customise any of our Signature Solitaire or Halo rings to feature a cathedral setting.

3. Bezel Setting

A more unique style, a bezel setting is more uncommon these days but is actually one of the oldest styles of ring settings. It features the stone or stones set into a ring of metal which slightly overlaps the edges of the stone, keeping it secure and safe. This is quite a distinct feature as the stone is surrounded by metal.

Bezel settings look stunning with a variety of stone shapes and sizes, and can be requested via our Complete Custom route.

4. Tension Setting

A definite departure from traditional engagement ring settings, tension settings are a little more uncommon and unique than others on this list. They use compression to hold the centre stone between two pieces of the band on either side.

We craft tension set rings upon request via our Complete Custom design process.

5. Split Shank Setting

A stylish statement, split shank settings feature very similar traits of a cathedral setting for the stone, but the ring band itself splits into two as it approaches the centre stone, creating a double band appearance.

This is a beautiful feature for both plain and pavé bands and can be requested via our Complete Custom route.
